Arch rivals Jake Paul and Tommy Fury will finally share a ring this afternoon( Sun., Feb. 26, 2023), inside Saudi Arabia's Diriyah Arena, following two separate fight cancellations and an outpouring of vitriol.
Half-brother of heavyweight champion Tyson Fury, Furry, withdrew from the first date due to illness and the second as a result of travel-related problems. In the interim, Paul out-dueled the legendary Anderson Silva and knocked out Tyron Woodley in their rematch while constantly trash-talking Fury.
Badou Jack and Ilunga Makabu compete for the WBC Cruiserweight championship on the PPV card, but we all know which fight will sell the most tickets. Who then takes it?
Regarding Paul's professional life and who he is as a person, much can be said( and has been said). Yes, he has fought smaller men who have never boxed almost exclusively. Yes, beating Anderson Silva, who is 47 years old, was his most impressive accomplishment to date( watch highlights). Yes, he once engaged in combat with Ben Askren, who was infamous for not only having poor striking but also cartoonishly nonexistent striking.
A truly talented young man who began too late to become a true contender but is still making consistent progress can be found if all the frippery is removed. Fury's opponents had a combined record of 14- 175- 5, and his most recent foe Daniel Bocianski was one of the weakest 10- 1 fighters you're likely to see, so his competition hasn't been much better.
Let's just concentrate on actual boxing skills since I believe we can call them even on that front. Fury unquestionably has the better jab of the two, but Paul, who is the naturally larger man on top of boasting heavier hands, doesn't put his power punches together as well. Fury isn't slick enough with his movement to keep things at jabbing distance, so Paul also believes he is the better body puncher, which is likely to play a significant role.
Fury isn't bad by 23-year-old standards and can perform some passable flurries, but his propensity for arm punches, average footwork, and tendency to tie himself up all suggest that Paul is dominating him in an ugly affair. Paul out-hustles Fury to a decision win or mid-round knockout, unless his verbal assault has awakened some dormant monster.
